ASUS Celebrates 20 Years of ROG with the Crosshair X870E Edition 20

Fourteen years ago we stood with a camera at an ASUS seminar at CeBIT, staring at a motherboard that didn't have a final name yet. It eventually became the Maximus V Formula: a board built to push limits, with a sound chip developed separately and extra power connectors for anyone who wanted to push it even further. In the language of the time, it was a flagship.

Computex has since become the place where that story plays out again every year, and 2026 was no exception. If anything, this year carried a bit more weight, because Republic of Gamers turned twenty. And apparently ASUS doesn't celebrate an anniversary with cake, but with two motherboards that show exactly where the brand came from and where it's headed.

An anniversary board with a price tag that caused as much of a stir as the specs

The ROG Crosshair X870E Edition 20 is the clearest example of how ASUS is approaching this milestone. The board is based on the Crosshair X870E Glacial, until recently the flagship of the AM5 line-up, but gets a completely different look: black with gold and red accents instead of the Glacial's white design. Under the hood, the ambition barely changes. ASUS specifies 24(110A)+2(110A)+2 power stages with ProCool II connectors, MicroFine chokes, and a full-copper thermal solution spanning the width of the board, joined by a 3D VC M.2 heatsink and a 3mm backplate heatsink.

Where it really gets interesting is the bundle around it. The Edition 20 isn't sold separately: ASUS ships the board exclusively together with the ROG Ryujin 360 Edition 20, an AIO cooler with an Asetek EMMA Gen10 V3Rx pump and a 40mm-thick, 20 FPI radiator without louvers. On top of the pump sits a dual swivel 6.67-inch AMOLED display that runs in sync with the rest of the system via ASUS Infohub. On the memory side, the board supports speeds up to 9600 MT/s and up to 256GB of DDR5, with NitroPath DRAM Technology, AEMP III, and DIMM Fit as the tools to actually get there.

All of that comes at a price, and for the European market that price became almost a story in itself. ASUS announced the bundle at €2,999, but the first listings at French retailers LDLC and Materiel.net appeared at €3,299.95, more than €300 above the official price. For a limited anniversary product with tight allocation, that gap is perhaps explainable, but it does raise the question of why a manufacturer still communicates an MSRP if retailers are already exceeding it before launch. The situation isn't much different in the US: on ASUS's own eShop, the bundle is listed at $3,299.99, well above what enthusiasts had expected going in based on the price of the Glacial itself.

The Maximus Z890 Apex: less theater, more laboratory

If the Crosshair X870E Edition 20 is the anniversary party, the ROG Maximus Z890 Apex is where the actual work happens. The Apex series has existed since 2017 with exactly one purpose: enabling memory and CPU overclocking records, without the extra flourishes other Maximus models carry. On Intel's Z890 platform, for second-generation Core Ultra processors, that translates to a 22(110A)+1(90A)+2(90A)+2(80A) power stage design, two DDR5 slots instead of four for shorter and cleaner signal paths, and official support up to 9600 MT/s. According to ASUS, improved signal routing is the reason kits are now consistently pushing past the 9 GT/s mark, something that was still the exception on earlier Apex generations.

That turned out to be no empty marketing claim on the floor of the Nangang Exhibition Hall. G.Skill used the Maximus Z890 Apex as the test platform for one of the show's most talked-about memory demos: a DDR5-10933 CL68 configuration with 48GB CUDIMM modules, well beyond what most visitors thought possible on a consumer platform. Add to that a system running 256GB of DDR5-8000, built from two 128GB 4R CUDIMM modules, and it becomes clear the line between "fast" and "a lot" on DDR5 is getting blurrier by the day.

The most striking example, though, didn't come from G.Skill itself, but from modder ShaggySVK, who built a system at the G.Skill booth shaped like a small rocket, complete with smoke effects, red lighting, and a launch button. Behind that staging sat a fully functional extreme overclocking rig: a Maximus Z890 Apex, an Intel Core Ultra 9 285K, G.Skill Trident Z5 memory, and an LN2 prototype cooler from ElmorLabs. The display next to the setup read DDR5-11867, with the ElmorLabs monitoring module and the LN2 container confirming this wasn't just for show, but a functional demonstration.

Two boards, one story

What ties the Edition 20 and the Apex together is that both circle back to the same idea as the Maximus V Formula we saw at CeBIT back in 2012: a board that exists mainly to show what's possible, with the rest of the line-up as the more practical option underneath. The difference is scale. Where the Formula impressed back then with two extra power connectors and a separately developed sound chip, we're now talking about 24-phase power stage designs, memory pushing well past 10,000 MT/s, and a bundle price that approaches the cost of a complete mid-range system.

ROG has had twenty years to evolve from "the board with the most extras" into a brand that runs its own record-breaking circuit, with the OC World Cup and OC World Record Stage now fixtures at every major trade show. The Crosshair X870E Edition 20 is the emotional piece in that story, built to collect and to show off. The Maximus Z890 Apex is the functional piece, built to break records. Together they tell a fuller story of where ROG stands in 2026 than either one could on its own.

For anyone who followed the Maximus V Formula back in the day: the ambition hasn't changed. Only the numbers have become something else entirely.
